Wednesday March 22

Rise and shine! We were up very early to catch a 6 AM flight from Christchurch thru Sydney and into Cairns Australia. Two flights, through customs, bio security and transferring our luggage and we're here. (They did confiscate our sunflower seeds)

Luggage carousels at Cairns airport.

We walked around the city center to get our bearings. Interesting town. Many hotels for tourists, but only small eateries. People our age strolling around and also college age/ 20 somethings. It's a balmy 85°. Kind of quiet.

The Esplanade

The Cairns lagoon for swimming  (no crocodiles)

We headed out for dinner and discovered an entirely different city. The eateries opened up, people were everywhere in the cooler evening. People out running,  exercising,  doing water aerobics in the lagoon, spilling out of the cafes.  There were even some malls that opened up only at night, like pop ups.
We watched a swarm of birds flit in and out of the trees. There were so many their wings sounded like the wind. And then there were bats (They are called flying foxes which eat fruit. Their wing span is about 18 inches. Dennis had to do some homework.).
