Sunday March 12

Had a nice breakfast and coffee across the street this morning. Then we drove to "the Redwoods" which is really a local park and forest and walked through the beautiful woods. They have these massive tree ferns plus other local trees. The redwoods are not local and the ones in northern California are bigger. But they were beautiful.

After some stops in shops and a light lunch we headed for the park. Today we were in for a local treat. The Moaris compete across the nation in their traditional dance and music. The local area teams had 5 teams which made it to the finals. They did an afternoon performance for their community today. We sat out on the lawn and watched some of the performances. We then again walked along the lake and ended up at a small a Anglican church which delivers their services in both English and Maori.

In the evening we attended a Moari event. They taught us about their customs, did dancing and
fixed us a traditional meal cooked with steam. We were taken to their spring where their water comes out of the ground. It's a holy place for them. At the  end of the evening we walked through the forest and saw glow worms.
