New Zealand and Australia


We are setting out for a fabulous trip on Wednesday March 8th to New Zealand and parts of Australia ending on March 31st.  Dennis and Denise

Here's our itinerary  (days and times in NZ & Australia terms)

Fly out Wed, March 8th our time

• Friday March 10th : arrive in Auckland  Spending time with Gavin and Sasha Pilkington

• Sat March 11-12th:   Wander around the Rotorua area with these friends

• Sun March 12th Attend the Mitai Maori Village experience

• Monday March 13th visit the Tangaririo National Park. Stay overnight in the park. 

• Tues March 14h  back in Rotorua for the night. Leave our friends. 

• Wed March 15th Trip to Hobbiton and then on to Auckland to spend the night. (Hobbiton adventure includes, the movie set, a buffet, Green Dragon Inn)

• Thursday March 16th fly from Auckland to Queenstown and pick up rental car. Drive to Te Anau

• Friday March 17th  “Trips and Tramps” tour..  (Drive to Milford area, guided walk on Milford track, followed by a afternoon cruise in Milford Sound)

• Sat March 18th  Drive to Wanaka from Te Anau (~3 hrs) explore the area

• Sun March 19th Drive to Franz Josef and take in sights along the way (Franz Josef is at the foot of a glacier)

• Monday March 20th Drive to Greymouth/leave car and hop on train to Christchurch

• Tuesday March 22nd Free day in Christchurch

• Wed March 22rd  Fly from Christchurch to Cairns Australia (via Sydney)

• Thurs March 23rd: “Reef Magic”: All day adventure on the Outer Barrier Reef (snorkeling, a       buffet and tea time, glass bottomed boas, underwater observatory)

• Friday March 24th: “Tropic Wings Coach Tour”  (includes Kuranda Scenic railway, Kuranda  Village, BBQ lunch, Pamagirri aboriginal dancers, rain forestation nature park and Koala & Wildlife Park and Sky rail and a duck boat ride)

• Saturday March 25th Free day in Cairns

• Sunday March 26th Fly to Sydney

• Monday March 27th  Free day in Sydney

• Tuesday March 28th:  Head out to the Blue mountains

• Wed March 29th; Free day in Sydney

• Thursday March 30th  Fly to Auckland

• Friday March 31st fly home (Auckland to LA to Portland)

Today we were booked for a trip to the Great Barrier Reef. We walked to the wharf in the rain. We headed out of the bay to a parked platoon out in the reef. The water was VERY rough and I got sea sick. They were very kind and had offered us on the boat anti nausea pills prior to the journey. They were great helping any who were struggling.  Our day consisted of docking at their platoon, being able to snorkel in their designated area or one could choose to do scuba diving. Dennis getting ready to snorkel  By 1:00 the weather had improved. The sun broke out and the waves calmed.  The sun and the changing tides really made the coral reefs brighten.   The ride back into shore was delightful. We ended the night with a delightful Italian dinner.    And ice cream

Sunday, March 26

 Today was another travel day. We left Cairns and flew into Sydney.  Our flight was late leaving, but that wasn't an issue for us except we were hungry. We checked into  our hotel which is right by Hyde Park and Town Hall square. Found a Korean BBQ spot and felt revived.  Our waiter at the Korean BBQ We then walked around to get our bearings and take in a few of the sights. Stopped at Woolworths ( local grocery store chain) and picked up breakfast items. We're now settled in for the night and have made a plan for tomorrow.  St Andrew's ( Anglican) St Mary's Cathedral  Archibald Fountain in Hyde Park St Mary's Cathedral

Wednesday March 29

 Today was suppose to have rain showers, so we stayed around town. We missed the raindrops and by 3:00 the sun was out and it was beautiful. We even went back to a few sights to get better pictures. We started out at the Botanical Gardens. The other day we had walked "by" the gardens, but today we actually walked through it. Beautiful layout. The government house, located at the edge of the gardens, is still used as a residence for the Govenor of New South Wales, when he/she comes to Sydney. Then on to museum number one ( after a coffee). Back to our room to rest our feet and have a snack. Then on to museum number two. Part of museum was housed in an old building  These were like 3D totem poles Since the sun came out, finally we resnapped some photos. Since the weather had turned so nice, we decided to walk the mile down to the quay to have dinner and enjoy the view. We finished dinner just as the sun was setting.
