Monday March 20th
We left Franz Josef and headed North on Hwy 6 to Greymouth. We stopped in for a coffee and a treat at Hokitika and made it to our destination of Greymouth by 12.
We topped off the car, turned the rental car in, checked in our luggage for our train trip and wandered Greymouth for a bit. It was a mining city, starting with gold, then went to coal.
We got a nice lunch and boarded the train for our trip to Christchurch.

The 139 mile train trip lasted just under 5 hours and took us west to east through the mountains. There was a variety of terrain. We went through a really long tunnel near the highpoint, (5.25 miles) known as the Great Divide, and through numerous small ones as we climbed down.
After the train trip, we were taken to our hotel in downtown Christchurch, found a grocery shop and crashed for the night.
